You may recognise this

When familiar anxiety suddenly feels unfamiliar.

Racing heart. Dodgy stomach. Escape planning. Health checking. Panic in the supermarket. Anxiety at the doctor's. Cancelled plans. Work stress. Relationships. Hormones. And the occasional day when your nervous system apparently decides it has nothing better to do than ruin your afternoon.

Oh Sh!t, I'm Panicking — And I've Got Things to Do is an honest, funny and refreshingly unpolished account of what happens when anxiety you thought you understood suddenly feels unfamiliar again in your forties.

At 45, Adele Clark isn't looking back from the other side of menopause with all the answers. She's right in the middle of it — trying to work out what's anxiety, what might be hormonal, what's stress, what needs a doctor and why her body seems to have quietly rewritten the instruction manual.

This is not a medical textbook. It's real life.

Inside you'll find supermarket panic attacks, health anxiety, relationships, work, grief, guilt, changing hormones and those completely ordinary moments that become ridiculously difficult when your brain decides there's an emergency.

And because sometimes reading an entire bloody chapter is one thing too many, there are Bloody Useful Bits throughout and 21 Oh Sh!t Pages at the back for the moments when you just need help getting through this bit.

For women who:

  • thought they had anxiety figured out until their forties arrived
  • are wondering, “Is this anxiety? Hormones? Stress? Or am I just having a bloody day?”
  • are tired of being told to “just relax”
  • want honesty and humour without pretending everything can be fixed with positive thinking
  • sometimes need practical help now, not another three-hour podcast

You don't have to read it perfectly. You don't even have to read it in order.

Read the story when you want company. Dip into the Bloody Useful Bits when you want something practical. Or go straight to the Oh Sh!t Pages when things go sideways.

Less spiral. More getting on with it.

Three ways to use the book

Three ways in.
Zero “just breathe.”

21 quick-reference pages for when panic is loud and the helpful advice you have read before is not currently landing.

The woman behind the panic

Written from the middle of it.

Adele Clark is a creative ecommerce developer based in the Peak District. She spent much of her post-university life in Seattle, USA. She wrote this book at 45 and very much not from the finish line, drawing on her experience of anxiety, panic, OCD-like rituals, health anxiety and periods of agoraphobia across different stages of her life.
